Pomegranate Wax & Colour Enhancement: Shine vs Real Aril Health

Detect polished or dyed pomegranates — paraffin-like outer shine, aril colour tricks, sulfur dioxide / fungicide concerns, and simple rinse checks.

8 min read

Pomegranates (anaar) sell on colour. That creates incentives for outer shine treatments and, in worst cases, colour tricks that do not match aril quality.

Outer rind: natural vs polished

  • Natural: Slightly matte or leathery; colour can be uneven; crown (calyx) looks dry but not painted.
  • Polished / waxed: Plastic-like gloss; thick film on a nail scrape; sometimes sticky after warm-hand rub.
  • Smell: Prefer mild fresh fruit smell at the crown — avoid solvent or chemical notes.

Use the same logic as our apple wax guide: scrape gently on a discreet spot. Thick peel-able film = heavy coating.

Aril health — the real test

The edible part is inside. Open the fruit:

  • Good: Plump arils, bright ruby to deep red (variety-dependent), juicy, balanced sweet-tart
  • Poor / suspect: Dry pith, brown edges, watery bland juice, or colour that looks stained rather than translucent

“Posh” outer colour with weak arils is a classic mismatch — put it back.

Residue and treatment concerns

Commercial lots may see fungicide or sulfur-related treatments in storage chains. You cannot assay SO₂ at home, but you can:

  1. Prefer sellers who name mandi / farm belt (e.g. Solapur Bhagwa).
  2. Rinse rind before cutting so surface films do not track into the bowl.
  3. Rinse separated arils briefly in clean water; drain well.

Simple home rinse check

  1. Wash whole fruit under running water; optional mild baking soda wipe on the rind.
  2. Cut on a clean board.
  3. Collect arils; rinse once in a colander.
  4. If rinse water looks oddly ink-stained beyond normal juice tint, pause and inspect — combine with outer scrape results.

NCR buying tip

Ask for a crack-open sample when buying by the piece. Verified stalls on FruitSellerRating list mandi source and trust badges so WhatsApp orders start with clearer expectations — especially in season when anaar piles look deceptively perfect under shop lights.

FAQs

How do I know if a pomegranate is artificially polished?

Look for mirror-like gloss with little natural texture, plus a thick film that scrapes off. Healthy fruit often has a more matte or naturally leathery rind. Always judge edible quality by the arils after opening.

Can the outside look perfect while arils are poor?

Yes. Outer wax or colour treatment can mask age. Open one fruit: arils should be plump, jewel-toned, and tart-sweet — not dull, dry, or oddly stained.

What rinse helps before eating arils?

Separate arils, rinse in cool potable water, optionally a brief mild baking soda bath for the whole fruit rind before cutting, then rinse again. Discard water; do not soak arils for long or they soften.
